Bengaluru, September 11, 2026: Vintage-style photographs and posters inspired by the 1980s have recently gone viral on social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp. Using AI-based applications, users are transforming their photographs into retro-style images featuring vintage outfits, classic backgrounds and old-film camera effects.
However, cyber experts have urged users to exercise caution before joining the trend, warning that uploading original photographs to AI applications could expose personal data and create opportunities for misuse.
The 1980s photo trend has gained considerable attention over the past few days, with people increasingly using AI tools to give their pictures a nostalgic look. While the trend may appear harmless, experts have raised concerns about the privacy and security risks associated with uploading personal photographs to unfamiliar applications.
Cybersecurity experts have cautioned users, particularly young women, against uploading high-quality original photographs without checking how the applications store, process and use the data. They warned that photographs containing facial data could potentially be misused for malicious purposes.
Experts said the collection of facial data could increase the risk of identity misuse, unauthorised profiling and other forms of cybercrime. There are also concerns that photographs uploaded to certain platforms could potentially be used to create deepfakes or manipulated images.
Another concern is that personal information associated with uploaded photographs could be collected, circulated or potentially traded through illicit online networks, including the dark web.
Experts have therefore advised users not to get carried away by viral social media trends and to avoid uploading original photographs to AI-based applications unless they are confident about the platform’s privacy and data-security practices.
They urged users to carefully review app permissions and privacy policies and exercise caution before sharing personal photographs online.
