Mangalore, Dec 19, 2012: Leaders and workers affiliated to various trade unions staged a jail bharo agitation and courted arrest near the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Mangalore on December 19, Wednesday. The agitation was organised demanding the early fulfillment of several demands of the workers prominently the demand for fixing the minimum salary at Rs 10,000.
The detained protestors were later released. The trade unions which participated in the protest included AITUC, BMS, INTUC, HMS, NOBW, DREU and RMS.
Prior to the jail bharo agitation, the workers marched in unison from the Town Hall to the Deputy Commissioner’s office. A protest meet held here was addressed by several trade union leaders.
Speaking on the occasion, B Madhava, State Vice President of the CITU, said the demand for a minimum salary of Rs 10,000 has remained unfulfilled since long He also demanded that the workers should be given job security irrespective of their affiliation to trade unions as also other benefits including provident fund and pension on par with permanent employees.
He said a nation would strike call would be given on February 20 and 21 if the demands remained unfulfilled. He also alleged that the government has not paid heed to the several protests staged by the unions until now.
Several Trade Union leaders including P Sanjeeva, AITUC leader, Vishwanath Shetty, District President of BMS and Sunil Kumar Bajal, District Secretary of the CPI(M) took part in the protest.
