Puttur, July 8, 2026: Congress leader and active Kambala organiser, Niranjan Rai (60) of Mathanthabettu, died after suffering a heart attack and collapsing at the Taluk Office on Wednesday.
Rai had participated in a Land Tribunal Court hearing being held at the Assistant Commissioner’s office when he suddenly fell ill and collapsed. He was immediately shifted to the Puttur Government Hospital, but doctors were unable to save him.
A resident of Mathanthabettu near Uppinangady, Niranjan Rai served as the president of the management committee of the Kodimbady Mahishamardini Temple. He was also actively involved in the Puttur Koti-Chennaya Jodukare Kambala Committee.
Rai was a member of the Puttur Land Tribunal and had served as the vice-president of the Bannur Seva Cooperative Society. He was also an active member of the Bunt community organisation.
He was well known as a commentator and analyst at Kambala events. His vast knowledge of Kambala, clear narration, and distinctive style had earned him widespread appreciation among Kambala enthusiasts.
He is survived by his wife, two children, and a large number of relatives and well-wishers.
