Liars, cheaters, sick people: Donald Trump says he is done dealing with Iran

US, Jul 8, 2026: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Iran was over, as he lambasted the Iranians and called them “liars, cheaters, and sick people". He also claimed that it was a “waste of time" negotiating with Tehran.

The statement came in the aftermath of fresh tensions in West Asia after the US forces launched attacks on Iran in what they described as an “immediate response" to Tehran’s attacks on commercial vessels crossing the strait.

Referring to the massive anti-regime protests in Iran in January this year, Trump said: “They’re liars, they’re cheaters, they’re sick people. They’ve hurt their people. They killed 54,000 people — as of now — who were protesting. You know when people say how come they haven’t taken over? They can’t take over because they’re dead".

“It’s a waste of time dealing with them", said Trump while speaking to reporters in Ankara at the NATO Summit.

The US President said the country’s forces had attacked them “very powerfully" after strikes on vessels crossing the strait. “We attacked very powerfully last night, the very dangerous people from Iran. They’re sick, there’s something wrong with them".

Trump reiterated that Washington would not let Iran pursue nuclear weapons –– a key element of the US-Iran preliminary agreement that requires Tehran reaffirm its commitment to never procure or develop nuclear weapons.

“We hit them [Iran] very hard last night. I told them that every time you hit, we hit, and, of course, they’re dirty players, so they go after everyone, probably including me. We don’t like them. I don’t like them. They’re evil people, and it’s the denuclearisation of Iran. And we’re going to denuke it," Trump said at the summit.

Why Trump Is Suddenly ‘Done’ With Iran

President Trump’s statement came hours after the US military launched “powerful strikes" on 80 targets across Iran in retaliation for what it described as Tehran’s attacks on ships crossing the vital strait of Hormuz –– which accounts for nearly one-fifth of the global oil and gas trade.

In a post on ‘X’, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) wrote: “U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces completed a new round of offensive strikes against Iran, July 7, hitting over 80 targets with precision munitions as an immediate response to Iran’s latest attacks on commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz".

The latest spate of attacks marked the highest number of assaults in a single day since April –– when the US and Iran agreed on a ceasefire –– according to the U.N. International Maritime Organisation.

Iran condemned the attacks, calling them a “blatant act of aggression".

Soon afterwards, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it launched a joint missile and drone operation targeting 85 sites linked to the US military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait. According to the IRGC, the operation was in response to the US attacks on coastal bases and non-military sites in Hormozgan and Mahshahr.

The fresh escalation in West Asia threatens an already-fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran, while also dampening hopes for the smooth restoration of maritime traffic through Hormuz.
