Mangaluru, December 13, 2025: Landowners whose properties were notified for acquisition for the widening of NH 169 between Mangaluru and Sanuru (Karkala) in Paduva village have demanded denotification of their lands, citing non-payment of compensation even nine years after the preliminary notification was issued on March 16, 2016.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Bhoo Maalikara Horata Samiti president Mariyamma Thomas said that in arbitration proceedings, the Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner in 2020 awarded compensation to land losers at the guidance value of ₹13.35 lakh per cent of land.
However, she said the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) later filed an appeal against the award in the district court, where the matter has been pending for over two years. As a result, landowners have been waiting for compensation for the past nine years.
Ms. Thomas demanded that if the NHAI is unable to pay compensation, it should initiate the process to denotify the lands and allow owners to use their properties. Alternatively, if the acquisition is to continue, compensation should be paid as per the latest guidance value along with interest for the delay.
She warned that landowners from Paduva would be compelled to launch an agitation in January if the issue is not resolved by the end of December.
Samiti secretary Vishwajeet was also present and addressed the media.
