Malpe, May 21, 2026: Six fishermen were rescued after a deep-sea fishing boat that had departed from the Malpe fishing harbour sank near Kodibengre on Tuesday night.

The rescued fishermen have been identified as boat captain Raghavendra from Uttara Kannada district and workers Rohidas Mogera, Sham Sundar Malik, Ujwal Malik, Satyajit Malik and Trilesh Bhaskar.

Boat sinks off

The deep-sea fishing boat ‘Sai Datta’, owned by Sandeep Kumar of Kidiyoor Padukere, had left Malpe harbour for fishing at around 10:30 pm on May 17. On May 19 at around 4:30 pm, while fishing in the sea off Kodibengre at a depth of about 38 metres, the crew heard a loud sound after an object struck the lower rear portion of the boat.

When captain Raghavendra inspected the boat, he found water rapidly entering it. The crew immediately sought help from a nearby fishing boat, ‘Sri Amma Bhavani’, and attempted to pump out the water, but their efforts failed.

All six fishermen were shifted safely to the rescue boat. While the sinking boat was being towed towards Malpe harbour, the rear support pole of the Amma Bhavani boat snapped, causing the damaged boat to sink completely at around 11 pm.

The incident is estimated to have caused losses of nearly Rs 65 lakh, including fish catch, fishing nets and diesel.
