Mangaluru, Oct 17, 2026: The Dakshina Kannada District Street Vendors’ Association (CITU) has welcomed the Mangaluru City Corporation’s decision to permit 95 traders to operate the Sunday Bazaar on Rosario Road, near State Bank, calling it a victory for their prolonged struggle.
For several years, the Sunday Bazaar was held near Town Hall in Mangaluru. However, over the past five months, the corporation had repeatedly conducted raids following public complaints and prevented traders from carrying on their business.
Led by CITU, the traders had been staging continuous protests, demanding permission to continue their business until an alternative arrangement was made. The Karnataka High Court had also stayed an FIR registered by the police against B.K. Imtiyaz, a leader of the street vendors’ association.
Meanwhile, District Minister in-charge U.T. Khader had directed the city corporation commissioner not to deny permission for the Sunday Bazaar.
Following the sustained protests, the corporation approved the traders’ request at a meeting of the Temporary Town Vending Committee held on Friday, allowing 95 traders to operate on Rosario Road near State Bank.
‘Victory for Our Struggle’: Imtiyaz
B.K. Imtiyaz, honorary president of the Dakshina Kannada District Street Vendors’ Association, said street markets add vibrancy to cities and that the Sunday Bazaar would greatly benefit poor and lower-middle-class consumers in Mangaluru.
He described the decision as a victory for the association’s prolonged struggle and said nobody had the right to deprive people of their livelihood.
Imtiyaz thanked District Minister in-charge U.T. Khader and City Corporation Commissioner Rahul Ratnam Pandey for responding to the concerns and sentiments of the traders.
‘Implement Street Vendors’ Law in Full’: Sunil Kumar Bajal
Sunil Kumar Bajal, a member of the Temporary Town Vending Committee, alleged that the corporation had subjected Sunday Bazaar traders to continuous harassment over the past five months by making false allegations and misinterpreting Supreme Court orders.
He said the committee’s approval was the result of the traders’ sustained struggle and urged the corporation to ensure the comprehensive implementation of the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act.
