New Delhi, Oct 15, 2026: The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notices to Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav and others over their October 12 march to the apex court to submit a petition concerning the Election Commission of India (ECI) and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi strongly objected to the conduct of the 13 petitioners, who have challenged the Election Commission’s manner of conducting the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across the country.

During the hearing, Chief Justice Surya Kant orally remarked that “nobody can browbeat” the court.

“We are not sitting in ivory towers. We know what statements they make outside and what they say in court,” the CJI observed.

“We would like to ask one of the petitioners about his conduct on the next hearing date,” he added while issuing notices in the petition filed by Gandhi, Yadav and other Opposition leaders.

The apex court also issued notices to the Delhi government, the Centre, the Election Commission of India, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, and Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, seeking their responses to petitions concerning alleged police brutality, the denotification of Jantar Mantar as a designated protest site, and the ongoing SIR of electoral rolls.
