Mangaluru/Udupi, May 20, 2026: Several medical shops across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts are likely to remain closed on Wednesday in support of a nationwide bandh protesting the online sale of medicines.

The protest has been called by the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists and the Karnataka Chemists and Druggists Association. The South Kanara Chemists and Druggists Association has also extended its support to the bandh.

Medical shop owners have expressed concern that the growing trend of online medicine sales has severely impacted traditional pharmacies. They have also alleged that medicines are being sold without valid prescriptions, increasing the risk of counterfeit drugs entering the market, misuse of antibiotics and threats to public health due to unregulated e-pharmacy systems.

Despite the protest, officials said arrangements have been made to ensure the availability of essential medicines to the public.

Assistant Drugs Controllers stated that some pharmacies will continue to function during the bandh. Medical stores operated by national-level pharmaceutical companies, Jan Aushadhi centres and pharmacies located within hospitals in Dakshina Kannada district will remain open as usual.

The Assistant Drugs Controller in Mangaluru has been appointed as the nodal officer for assistance. The public can contact the office on 9448205177 or 0824-2218451 for any help related to medicine availability.

Meanwhile, the Udupi District Chemists and Druggists Association has announced that medical shops across the district will participate in the protest and remain closed on Wednesday.

However, hospital pharmacies, Jan Aushadhi centres and pharmacies run by major pharmaceutical companies in Udupi district will continue operations without interruption.

The district association has already submitted a memorandum to the district administration supporting the nationwide strike call issued by the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists and the Karnataka State Chemists and Druggists Association.
