Mangaluru, May 21, 2026: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Emergency Response Control Room (ICR-ER) under the Union Home Ministry have warned fishermen along the Karnataka coast not to venture into the sea from May 20 to May 25 due to the possibility of rough weather and heavy storms developing over the Arabian Sea.

Between May 20 and May 22, strong winds with speeds of 40 to 50 kmph are expected along the Karnataka and Kerala coasts, Lakshadweep, Maldives and the Comorin region. In some places, wind speeds may intensify up to 60 kmph. In several parts of the southwest Arabian Sea, especially near the Somalia coast, winds may reach speeds of 45 to 55 kmph, with gusts likely to touch 65 kmph.

Strong winds of 40 to 50 kmph are also expected over the Gulf of Mannar, the southwest and southeast Bay of Bengal, and the Andaman Sea region. Officials have warned that wind speeds may exceed 65 kmph in parts of the Sri Lankan coast and southwest Bay of Bengal.

Fishermen who are already at sea have been strictly advised to return safely to the shore immediately. Authorities have urged fishermen to follow all official weather advisories issued by the IMD.

Warning messages have already been sent to all coastal states and Union Territories, including Karnataka, Kerala, Goa, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, and officials have been asked to remain on high alert.
