Belthangady: Engineering student drowns in Netravati River

Belthangady, May 20, 2026: A final-year engineering student drowned while swimming in the Netravati river near Pajiradka temple in Belthangady taluk after a group of seven students ventured into the water on Monday evening.

The incident occurred around 4 pm on May 19 in the Netravati river at Pajiradka in Kalmanja village. The deceased has been identified as Shripoorna (21), a native of Gokak in Belagavi district and a final-year engineering student at a private college in Ujire.

According to reports, the group had gone to the river for a swim when Shripoorna was swept away by the strong currents and went missing.

Upon receiving information, local residents immediately began a search operation. Personnel from the fire and emergency services, along with members of the Shaurya disaster response team, joined the rescue efforts and continued the operation through the night.

The body was recovered from the river at around 9.30 pm.

Dharmasthala police sub-inspector Samarth R Ganigere and his team visited the spot, conducted an inspection, and registered a case.
