Udupi, Oct 9, 2025: A new medium-sized barge named ‘Kaveri’, built at a cost of ₹2.05 crore to connect Kodi Bengre and Hangarakatte via river route, was inaugurated at the Hangarakatte port by Karnataka Minister for Fisheries, Ports and Inland Water Transport, Mankal S. Vaidya.

Speaking at the event, Minister Vaidya said the new barge service will be a major boon for residents of Kodi Bengre—an island-like village—and will also provide convenience to tourists visiting the area. The service will significantly cut down travel time, as commuters previously had to take a lengthy detour by road, he added.

The minister assured that plans are in place to construct a bridge in the near future to further improve connectivity for local residents.

Outlining development initiatives for the Hangarakatte port, Vaidya said efforts will focus on promoting fishing-related activities, port infrastructure, and dredging works to enhance navigability. He also noted that a new shed is being constructed at the port at a cost of ₹50 lakh, and the government will provide full support to upgrade facilities.

Appreciating local initiatives for social progress, the minister lauded the community’s achievement in making Kodi Bengre a tobacco-free village and urged residents to continue fostering a healthy, addiction-free lifestyle.
