Mangalore, Oct 1, 2011: Speaking at an event jointly organized by the district administration, Women and Child Welfare Department, Zilla Panchayat, and Department of Welfare of Disabled and Senior Citizens to mark World Senior Citizens Day on Saturday, Dr. K. N. Vijayaprakash, the CEO of Zilla Panchayat, said that a senior citizens service centre will soon be set up in Mangalore.
Further, he said that the revenue department has been instructed to identify 30 cents land for the purpose and that construction work will begin as soon as the land is identified.
Stating that 19,000 identity cards have been issued to senior citizens, he spoke of the need to recognize the volunteers at old age homes. He also spoke of the need to respond to the requirements of those who brought us up and educated us.
Flaying the elected representatives and officials who were absent on the occasion, MLA U. T. Khader said that even the youth should be involved in Senior Citizens’ Day activities. Urging the senior citizens to get involved in social service to beat loneliness and boredom, he said that should trust the youth and guide them in the right direction.
Advocate Udayananda delivered a lecture titled Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens’ Act 2007 and said that this law applies even to non resident Indians. The tribunal, headed by the sub divisional magistrate, has the right to provide maintenance of as much as Rs. 10,000 to each applicant.
An essay competition was also organized for PU students and winners P. L. Prashanth of Belthangady and Raksha Y. S. of Puttur read out their essays on this occasion.
Janardhan Gowda of the ZP standing committee on social justice presided. Shakunthala, the deputy director of the Women and Child Welfare Department was also present.
