Mangalore, Sep 7: Organizations, industries, and banks held a protest in front of the DC office as part of all-India strike.

Sharath Holla of the All India Bank Employees Association said on the occasion that the recent hike in the prices of petrol and diesel has led to a hike in the prices of all essential commodities owing to which an administered price mechanism should be re-introduced for petroleum products.

B. Madhava, the convener of JCTU, said that the system of contract labour should be eliminated and that 3 percent of the GDP should be set aside for the welfare of unorganized workers, who comprise 90 percent of the working class. He also said that the prices of essential commodities must be controlled for the benefit of the poor sections of society. He urged the government to provide 35kg of rice for the poor and the middle classes at subsidized rates of Rs. 2 per kg.

Chandrahas Ullal of BSNL, Sunil Kumar Bajal, and Mohammed Rafi participated in the protest. The protestors raised their voices against violation of labour laws, price hike, and disinvestment of public sector undertakings.
