Mangalore, Oct 2: Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Wild Life Week celebrations at Dr. Shivaram Karanth Biological Park Pilikula Saturday, District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar revealed that it has been decided at a recent Karnataka Biodiversity Board meeting that special incentives ranging from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 10,000 will be provided to those who protect trees belonging to endangered species.
Further, he said that the state government is focusing on the preservation of trees that are on the verge of becoming extinct.
Director H. J. Jayaprakash Bhandary said that the park will utilize Rs. 43 lakh approved by the state government to build enclosures for water birds and snakes and for other development activities.
He also revealed that the park will soon acquire a pair of hippopotamuses and bison from the Mysore Zoo as early as possible. The enclosures for these animals are already in place, he added.
Anantha Hegde Ashisara, the chairman of the Task Force on Western Ghats, and DC Dr. N. S. Channappa Gowda were also present.
A rest house constructed by Karnataka Bank on the park premises was also inaugurated.
An exhibition of wild life photography also formed part of the event.
