Mangalore, Oct 1, 2011: Addressing a press conference at the office of the district BJP, Padmanabha Kottary, the president of the district BJP, said that farmers who have given up their land for industries are now distressed.
Stating that industries have already started acquiring agricultural land for purposes such as gas pipelines, he said that land acquisition should be stopped immediately.
Speaking about the proposed elephant corridor, he said that this Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary scheme will include reserve forest and other areas, owing to which local people and farmers living near the forests of Puttur, Sullia, and Belthangady will always be terrified of being harassed by these animals.
He also said that a memorandum has been presented to the CM to give up this project, which will create a number of problems for the common people.
Regarding the pipeline, he said that the Cochin – Mangalore – Bangalore – Chennai pipeline will pass through Mangalore, Bantwal, and Belthangady, giving sleepless nights to farmers because the pipeline will be laid in their agricultural land.
He also urged concerned officials not to cancel ration cards and create unnecessary problems for the common people. He said that the authorities can cancel ration cards only if they are proved to be fake or illegal.
Monappa Bhandary, the former president of the district BJP; Praveen Anchan, the mayor of Mangalore; Rukmayya Poojary; Shayna Jayaram; Sulochana G. K. Bhat; and many others were also present.
