Mangaluru: Landslide destroys five homes in Kannur; MLA promises rebuilding

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, June 17, 2025: Continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days has caused widespread waterlogging and significant damage to several homes across Mangaluru.

In Kannur, a landslide triggered by the downpour completely destroyed five houses situated at the base of a nearby hill. The affected families, including those of Hameed Ustad, Maimuna, Saadiq, and Shenaaz, are now in distress, having lost their homes.

Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyas Kamath, along with former Kannur ward corporator Chandravathi, visited the site to assess the situation.

Recounting the incident, Saadiq, one of the affected residents, said, “Around 3 am, the hill behind our houses gave way due to the intense rain. With no proper drainage in place, the water had nowhere to go. Though we tried to create temporary channels for the rainwater to flow, the continuous downpour led to a landslide that damaged five houses.”

MLA Kamath acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating, “Due to the unrelenting rains, five houses at Dayambu Gudde in Kannur have been severely damaged. More than 100 houses in the vicinity, especially near the railway track, lack proper road connectivity, creating major hardships for the residents. I intend to allocate ₹3 crore from the minority welfare fund to improve infrastructure in the area, including the construction of motorable roads. In medical emergencies, people are forced to carry patients on foot, which is unacceptable.”

He added that plans are underway to construct an underpass to ease access, and discussions have already been held with Minister V Somanna. “A new road is also being developed, and we will be seeking permission from the railway department for its completion,” he said.
