Honorary Doctorates awarded to Ronald Colaco and Prakash Shetty at Mangalore University Convocation

Mangaluru, June 16, 2024: During the 42nd convocation ceremony of Mangalore University on Saturday, June 15, honorary doctorate degrees (honoris causa) were awarded to NRI entrepreneur and philanthropist Dr. Ronald Colaco and entrepreneur Prakash Shetty. Another recipient of the honorary doctorate, Thumbay Moideen, was unable to attend due to prior commitments.

Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot and Prof. Sachin Chaturvedi, Director General of the Research and Information System for Developing Countries in New Delhi, conferred the honorary doctorates upon Dr. Ronald Colaco and Prakash Shetty.

In addition, 155 candidates from the university and 22 international students received doctorate degrees in various disciplines: 51 in arts, 73 in science, 26 in commerce, and 5 in education. The ceremony also saw the distribution of 58 gold medals and 57 cash prizes to students. A total of 168 ranks were awarded, with 72 students achieving first rank—52 at the postgraduate level and 20 at the undergraduate level.

Delivering the convocation address, Prof. Sachin Chaturvedi emphasized the need for lifestyle changes to reduce carbon footprints. He highlighted India’s leadership in promoting sustainable development and lifestyles, noting the G20 Bali Leaders’ Declaration’s endorsement of these concepts. Under India’s G20 presidency, the LiFE initiative gained significant international support, advocating for a healthy, green lifestyle.

In his presidential address, Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot urged students, especially those with PhDs, to take responsibility for spreading education, particularly among underprivileged children in villages. He encouraged graduates to assist children who cannot afford educational expenses, emphasizing that education plays a crucial role in achieving success and should be combined with values for the well-being of the world and humanity.

Minister for Higher Education MC Sudhakar, who also serves as the pro-chancellor of the university, addressed the ceremony.
