Mangalore, Feb 17, 2012: A special condolence meeting was held in honor of late BJP leader Dr. V. S. Achayra on Wednesday, for which a large number of people from all political parties and walks of life were present.

Speaking on the occasion, T. C. Shivashankar Murthy, the vice chancellor of Mangalore University, said that he got acquainted with Dr. Acharya only after becoming the vice chancellor although he had heard of him. Stating that Dr. Acharya used to advice him like an elder brother, he said that he had launched 5 – 6 universities in just 2 years.

P. Jayaram Bhat, the managing director and executive chairman of Karnataka Bank, said that Dr. Acharya was concerned about the bank and would often refer to it as “our bank.”

Ivan D’Souza, the secretary of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), said that Dr. Acharya was a guide and mentor for young politicians. He also admitted that Veerappa Moily, the union minister for corporate affairs, used to advise him to consult Dr. Acharya on political and budget issues.

M. B. Puranik, the vice president of the state Vishwa Hindu Parishad, said that he was very close to Dr. Acharya, who used to opine that temples should be free of politics.

Aerya Lakshminarayan Alva, the litterateur, said that Dr. Acharya was least interested in wealth and influence. Overcome by emotion, Mr. Alva broke down on stage and could not continue speaking.
