Nepal floods: Death toll rises to 469; over 1,500 rescued

Kathmandu, Aug 28, 2026: The death toll from the devastating flash floods in Nepal has risen to 469, police said on Friday, as rescue and recovery operations continued for the third consecutive day.

Rescue teams have been recovering bodies from eight districts across the Himalayan nation, while search operations remain underway in several affected areas.

According to police, 178 bodies have been recovered from Chitwan, 110 from Nawalparasi East, 44 from Gorkha, 37 from Nuwakot and 33 from Dhading. Another 28 bodies were recovered from Tanahu, 27 from Nawalparasi West and 12 from Rasuwa.

More than 1,500 injured and stranded people have been rescued from various flood-hit areas. Many of those rescued are receiving treatment at hospitals in Kathmandu.

The disaster struck on Wednesday after an ice-rock avalanche triggered by a glacial collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border sent a massive torrent of water, mud and debris downstream through central Nepal.

The floods caused widespread destruction, sweeping away entire villages and towns, vehicles, roads and several bridges. The scale of the devastation has severely disrupted connectivity and left several areas badly affected.
