New Delhi, Oct 11, 2026: US President Donald Trump on Sunday announced that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate ceasefire targeting energy infrastructure, though Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the announcement was new to him and sought clarification on its implementation.
“Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social, urging both sides not to violate the agreement. He did not specify its duration or terms. There was no immediate confirmation from the Kremlin or the White House.

Speaking to Axios, Zelensky said Ukraine would support the ceasefire if Russia agreed to it, adding that Kyiv was awaiting details from Washington. In a post on X, he reiterated Ukraine’s support for de-escalation and measures to protect civilian lives.
The announcement came amid renewed tensions over Trump’s call for Ukraine to elect a new president. In an interview with ABC News aired on Sunday, Zelensky urged Trump to secure a 60-day ceasefire, saying it would allow Ukraine to organise elections.
Trump had criticised Zelensky on Saturday, arguing that Ukraine needed a new leader capable of reaching a peace deal with Russia. Zelensky responded that choosing the country’s leadership was a decision for the Ukrainian people, while holding elections during wartime posed significant challenges.
Zelensky also stressed that Ukraine would continue defending itself against Russian attacks. Earlier, he said Kyiv was prepared to stop targeting Russian oil refineries if Moscow halted strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, emphasising that any de-escalation must be reciprocal and backed by credible guarantees.
