Abu Dhabi, May 17, 2026: A drone strike triggered a fire outside the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday, authorities confirmed, amid rising tensions in West Asia despite an ongoing ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

According to the Abu Dhabi Media Office, the fire broke out in an external electrical generator located outside the inner perimeter of the nuclear facility in the Al Dhafra region. No injuries were reported and radiation safety levels at the plant remained unaffected.

In an official statement, authorities said emergency teams responded immediately to contain the fire and all precautionary measures were taken.

The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation confirmed that the incident did not affect the safety of the nuclear plant or the operational readiness of its core systems, adding that all units were functioning normally.

Authorities also urged the public not to spread rumours and to rely only on official sources for information regarding the incident.

The drone strike comes amid a fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran following months of military escalation involving the US, Israel and Iran. Though the truce brokered by Washington has largely held since April 8, tensions continue to simmer due to sporadic drone and missile-related incidents across the region.

Earlier, similar drone-related incidents had reportedly affected energy infrastructure in the UAE, including fires at facilities in Fujairah’s petroleum zone and Abu Dhabi’s Ruwais industrial complex and gas plants.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump stirred speculation after posting a cryptic message on his Truth Social platform stating, “It was a calm before the storm,” alongside an AI-generated image depicting himself aboard a US Navy vessel surrounded by warships and vessels bearing apparent Iranian flags.

The ongoing tensions have heightened concerns over the stability of global energy markets, with fears that renewed conflict in West Asia could further disrupt oil supply chains and prolong the global energy crisis.

Trump has previously described the US-Iran ceasefire as being “on massive life support,” reflecting continued uncertainty over the durability of the truce despite limited diplomatic engagement reportedly mediated by Pakistan.
