Woman held prisoner for 20 years by husband and mistress

Mangalore, Nov 4, 2011:  K. P. Suresh Raj, an architect in Mangalore, has been accused by his own daughter of confining her mother to a dark room in her own house for the past 20 years so that he could live with his mistress. Suresh Raj constructed a house called “Madhusara,” which is now property worth Rs. 3 crore, after his marriage to Vilasini. The property is located opposite CV Nayak Hall on Bunts Hostel Road. He has denied entry into the house to his own daughter and son-in-law in spite of court orders.

The other woman in the story is Manorama Rao, who was married to another man, whom she left along with her one-year-old daughter, and disappeared only to resurface later as an employee of KREC. Suresh Raj soon became friendly with Manorama and began ill-treating Vilasini.

This story came to light just a couple of weeks back when the daughter of Suresh Raj and her husband, who work in Bangalore, visited the office of People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) in Mangalore. Sheen and Satish, the couple, told the story of how Manorama had destroyed their happy and prosperous family life, after which their father began ill-treating their mother Vilasini.

P. B. D’Sa, the state president of PUCL, addressed a press conference on Thursday, stating that he will write to the Human Rights Commission and will later approach the Mangalore Police Commissioner to seek justice for the victim.

According to Sheen and Satish, Vilasini Raj enjoyed perfect physical and mental health till Manorama Rao entered her house in 1990. Later, she started losing her mental balance and was confined in a dark room in her house. Manorama started living with Suresh Raj along with her 5-year-old son, who was born out of an extra-marital relationship with Suresh Raj. According to Sheen, her father had an extra marital relationship with Manorama for a long time. He had even purchased a house for her at Bendoorwell, where her son Swarun was born. Her father even used to take her and her brother to visit Manorama and Swarun.

When Vilasini came to know of this affair, she went to Suresh Raj’s office in Falneer and created a scene. Life turned hell for Vilasini shortly after this incident. She was confined to a dark room in her own house and not allowed to come out. During these 20 years, Vilasini Raj lost her mental balance and memory and is now unable to converse properly. Sheen suspects that her father and his mistress are medicating Vilasini so that she can die and her father can inherit her property.

Sheen and Satish want to take care of Vilasini and give her proper medical treatment, but their father is not permitting them to do so.
