Mangaluru: MCC clears Town Hall footpaths; protesting vendors detained

Mangaluru, Jun 29, 2026: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) on Sunday launched an eviction drive to clear roadside vendors occupying footpaths near the Town Hall area, triggering protests from affected vendors. Several protesters were detained by police during the operation.

MCC Commissioner Ravichandra Naik personally supervised the drive, directing officials as encroachments were removed. The operation was carried out to enforce civic regulations against unauthorised vending and ensure unobstructed pedestrian movement.

Before the eviction began, the commissioner interacted with vendors and informed them that conducting business on public footpaths was not permitted under existing laws.

The vendors, many of whom claimed to have been operating in the area for nearly 40 years, appealed to the authorities to provide an alternative location. "We have earned our livelihood here honestly for four decades. We are not thieves. Please make alternative arrangements for us," they urged.

However, the commissioner said the corporation could not provide an alternate site and reiterated that civic rules must be followed. He warned that strict action would be taken against anyone continuing to occupy the footpaths illegally.

The situation turned tense as some vendors opposed the eviction. Police detained those who allegedly obstructed the drive and shifted them from the spot in police vehicles.

The MCC said the eviction was aimed at removing encroachments, ensuring compliance with civic regulations, and restoring safe and free movement for pedestrians in the busy Town Hall area.
