Mangaluru: Women’s chain-snatching cases solved; one arrested, stolen gold recovered

Mangaluru, Jun 30, 2026: Police have solved two chain-snatching cases involving women reported from the Chokkabettu area under the jurisdiction of the Surathkal Police Station and arrested one accused.

The arrested accused has been identified as Mohammed Abdul Jaffer (28).

According to police, in the early hours of June 26, at around 2 a.m., the accused allegedly attempted to snatch a gold karimani chain from a woman who was asleep in her bedroom at a house belonging to Zaheed in 2nd Block, Azad Nagar, Chokkabettu. He reportedly reached through the bedroom window and tried to pull the chain from her neck. During the attempt, the chain snapped. The accused escaped with a portion of the karimani chain worth approximately Rs 20,000, while the remaining portion stayed with the woman. A case was registered at Surathkal Police Station as Crime No. 78/2026 under Section 304 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

In another incident, on June 27, between 5:00 a.m. and 5:15 a.m., Fayaz, a resident of 8th Block, Chokkabettu, had left home to offer prayers at a mosque after closing the front door. During that time, an unidentified person allegedly entered the house, reached the bedroom where Apreena was asleep, and attempted to snatch the gold chain from her neck. The chain broke during the struggle, and the accused fled with a portion of the gold chain worth approximately Rs 1 lakh. A small piece of the chain and its pendant remained with the victim. Based on the complaint, Surathkal Police registered Crime No. 79/2026 under Sections 305 and 304 of the BNS.

After investigating both cases and gathering intelligence, police arrested Mohammed Abdul Jaffer on June 29 near State Bank in Mangaluru city while he was allegedly in possession of the stolen gold ornaments. Police recovered all the stolen jewellery connected to both cases in its original condition.

Police also stated that the accused has previous criminal cases registered against him, including Crime No. 36/2025 at Surathkal Police Station under Sections 326(F), 324(5), 352, 351(3), and 3(5) of the BNS, and Crime No. 123/2018 at Urwa Police Station under Sections 341, 323, 504, and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
