Mangalore, June 28, 2011: Young people must not be afraid of saying no to alcohol. They must be able to resist peer pressure to try it, said Irine Rebello, chief guest, speaking at a function to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse (June 6) on Monday.

Talking on drug abuse and the role of youth at the event organised by the Integrated Rehabilitation Centre of Addicts, De-addiction and Counselling Centre, she told the audience to take to games, sports, martial arts, gym or social work. Youngsters should never believe that alcohol could be quit slowly. The only thing that will leave slowly was your life, she said.

It was false that there could be no fun without liquor. Ivan D’Souza, secretary, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, and chief guest, said that although bars should not permit entry to those aged below 15, such youngsters do get into bars. Shops next to colleges sell drugs. Dayawathi, Block Education Officer, Mangalore, said that students must not try alcohol or drugs though it might look tempting and they might think that the solution to their problems lay in liquor. Ravish Thunga, psychiatrist and director, said that he saw the problem of drug abuse everyday among youth and students. Satheesh Rao, President, LINK AACC, led the oath taken by the students to keep away from alcohol and drugs.

Judith Mascarenhas, former Deputy Mayor and LINK Anti Addiction Citizen Committee, said that youth should ponder over the oath they had taken to keep away from alcohol and drugs.
