Kundapur, Apr 12, 2026: In a first for Karnataka, the Government Model Higher Primary School in Vandse under the Byndoor block has introduced an Artificial Intelligence (AI) robot teacher named ‘Iris’, bringing advanced technology into a rural classroom setting.
The initiative, implemented through a public-private partnership with Maker Labs Edutech Pvt Ltd, marks a significant step in modernising government school education. ‘Iris’, earlier launched in a Kerala school, can interact in over 20 languages, answer academic queries from LKG to Class 10, and engage students through gestures and voice-assisted learning.

Developed under the Atal Tinkering Lab scheme of NITI Aayog, the robot features interactive modules and mobility, and is being integrated into the school curriculum. Teachers are undergoing training to operate the system. The robot is estimated to cost around Rs 3.5 lakh.
Education experts say the initiative will bridge traditional teaching with digital learning, enhancing student interest in science and technology while supporting classroom instruction.
Established 111 years ago, the Vandse school has emerged as a model rural institution, catering to 334 students from 12 nearby villages. Supported by the Sri Mookambika Charitable Trust, SDMC, alumni, and staff, the school offers free English medium education along with transport and extracurricular training. The introduction of ‘Iris’ adds to its growing list of technology-driven initiatives.
