Mangalore, June17, 2011:Scholarships were distributed among the children of police personnel on June 16 at the Mangalore Police Commissionerate.
Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh welcomed the gathering and said that the police department distributes scholarships among students to motivate them to pursue their higher education. The department has selected 37 student achievers, including 10 PUC students and 27 SSLC students. Scholarships of Rs. 50,000 each will be given to students who have scored over 90 percent while those who have scored below 90 percent will receive scholarships of Rs. 20,000. The commissioner concluded his speech by urging the scholarship students to be good citizens of the country.
Ronald Colaco, the NRI entrepreneur and philanthropist, said that people seek help from the police when they become victims of a crime, but blame them if the judgment is not in their favor. Stating the people have forgotten the great service rendered by police personnel and the sacrifices they make, he said that policemen are not even paid as well as the policemen in other countries.
Revealing the information that NGPs such as MRPL and other corporate bodies often help policemen to upgrade their police stations, he spoke of how he had donated a modern, well-equipped police station in Fraser Town in Bangalore. When the public helps the police department to upgrade their police station, the relationship between the police and the public will get better, he opined.
He then distributed scholarships among 37 students. Note books, stationery, and school bags were also given away on the occasion.
Alok Mohan, the IGP of western range, also spoke on the occasion.
SP Labhu Ram and a number of police inspectors from all over DK were also present.
