According to the NIA, the accused had entered India through Benapole, Jashore and Akhaura in Bangladesh, procured fake Indian identity documents, and were engaged in garbage collection businesses in parts of Bengaluru. They were also involved in trafficking Bangladeshi nationals into India for employment.

The case was registered in 2023 based on intelligence inputs. During the probe, 12 persons were arrested and officials seized digital devices, Bangladeshi identity documents, fake Indian ID cards, and Indian currency. A chargesheet was filed in February 2024.

Investigations revealed that the accused had illegally set up sheds on vacant properties in Bengaluru to house trafficked individuals. The NIA said further operations are under way to identify and take action against other illegally residing Bangladeshi nationals in the state.
