Mangaluru, Apr 10, 2026: Fr Melwin J Pinto SJ, Pro-Chancellor of St Aloysius University, Rector of St Aloysius Institutions, and Vice President of Mangalore Jesuit Educational Society (MJES), passed away at 4:00 PM at Father Muller Hospital on Friday, April 10. He was 63. He had been critically ill since March 31 and was undergoing treatment. Though he underwent a successful angioplasty, he later developed a brain clot that required surgery and could not recover.
The St Aloysius community and the Jesuit province have expressed deep grief. The funeral will take place on Monday, April 13, according to an announcement signed by Socius Fr Arun Kumar SJ. The mortal remains will be kept for public viewing at the St Aloysius College Chapel from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and at Divine Mercy Church, Fatima Retreat House, from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM, followed by Mass and burial at the Jesuit Cemetery, Mangaluru.
Born in 1963, Fr Melwin completed his education at St Aloysius and joined the Jesuit order on June 20, 1981. He was ordained a priest on April 14, 1997.
He held an MA in English and a Master’s in Education, along with diplomas in psychology, counselling, and school administration. He served as headmaster in Hassan from 1996 to 1999, and went on to found St Joseph’s Indian PU College, serving as principal until 2007.
He later headed St Aloysius High School, Mangaluru (2007–2011), and served as principal of St Joseph’s PU College, Hassan, until 2012. He also worked with Vatican Radio in Rome on the English desk for Asia and Indian languages.
He served as director of Fatima Retreat House, Valencia, and later as superior of the Jesuit study home ‘Vidyaniketan’ in Dharwad.
Fr Melwin is remembered as a deeply thoughtful yet humble priest, known for his gentle nature, engaging homilies, and his ability to make people feel valued.
