Mangalore, June 29, 2011: District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar has promised that the state government will provide new houses to all the 1,126 Koraga families in DK within 2 years.

He was interacting with Gram Panchayat members at a programme organized by Sugrama, an association of Gram Panchayat members.

He said that new houses can be provided to members of the Koraga Community by pooling together finances obtained from various departments.

Just before the minister gave his promises, Sheena Shetty, the ombudsman for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Scheme, spoke about the plight of the 1,126 homeless Koraga families. Stating that the Koragas, who are the original inhabitants of Mangalore, must have a roof ove their heads, he urged the minister to provide funds.

Explaining the matter, he said that currently, there are two types of housing schemes for Koragas—the Rs. 1 lakh scheme and the Rs. 40,000 scheme. Unfortunately, nobody from the community can build houses with the funds provided. They had therefore appealed to the government to provide them 3-roomed houses worth Rs. 1.5 lakh each, and the minister responded favorably to this appeal.

MLA UT Khader was also present.
