Moodbidri, January 6, 2026: A tragic incident was reported from Moodbidri, where a young woman died by suicide after jumping into the Gurupura River in front of her friend.
The deceased has been identified as Navya, a resident of Kadapalla near Gandhinagar in Moodbidri. She was employed at a private institution, Alankar, in Moodbidri. On Monday, Navya had gone to the banks of the Gurupura River along with her friend, who hails from Niggodi.
According to sources, Navya suddenly jumped into the river. Shocked by the incident, her friend attempted to rescue her by holding her hand and pulling her back, but the effort proved unsuccessful. During the rescue attempt, the friend sustained serious injuries to her hand.
KPCC secretary Mithun Rai, who was passing through the area at the time, immediately responded to the incident. With the assistance of local residents, he helped arrange emergency measures to retrieve the body from the river, displaying a humane and prompt response.
