Kasaragod: Two Kottayam students drown at Bekal Beach, two rescued

Kasaragod, Jun 16, 2026: Two students from Kottayam drowned in the sea at Pallikkere Beach near Bekal Fort on Sunday evening, while two others were rescued.

The deceased have been identified as Ankit (20) and Appu T. Abraham (20), both residents of Changanassery in Kottayam district.


Students drown

The incident occurred at around 6.30 pm when a group of six students, who had arrived at the beach as part of a trip, visited the area. Four of them entered the sea, during which Ankit and Appu were swept away by the strong currents.

The students had come to visit Bekal Fort. Following the incident, a search operation was launched immediately to trace the missing students. However, there was no sign of the two students until late Sunday night.

Personnel from the Coast Guard, Fire and Rescue Services, along with local residents, are continuing search operations for the students who were swept away by the sea.
