Heavy rains lash DK, Udupi districts

Mangalore, June 28: A huge tree was uprooted at Dabbadka in Chembu near Sullia after heavy rains lashed the region on Monday. Heavy rains continue to lash Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Monday. A couple sustained severe injuries when a banyan tree and an electric pole crashed on their house at Malavoor village near Gurpur.

Yusuf and Zohara have been shifted to Fr Muller’s Hospital after the accident, caused due to the heavy rains in the district. Their house has been completely damaged.

In the last 24 hours, Moodbidri has received highest rainfall of 118.4 mm followed by Bantwal— 109.4 mm, Sullia—98.4 mm, Belthangady— 96.4 mm, Puttur—72.8 mm and Mangalore—24.4 mm.

According to a press release from Meteorological department, very heavy rains would lash coastal Karnataka in the next 48 hours. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into fishing activities as strong onshore winds are expected off Karnataka coast.

Heavy rains which lashed Sullia threw normal life out of gear on Monday. A house was partially damaged when soil caved in at a house in Aletti. A huge tree fell on a Naganakatte at Ayyappa Swamy Katte in Dabbadka. The arecanut, coconut, cocoa, and rubbers trees were damaged in the region.

About 25 acres of agriculture produce were damaged completely when heaps of dumped fly ash mount collapsed at Santhoor near Nandikur.

Udupi district recorded an average rainfall of 55.43 mm for the last 24 hours. Karkala received highest of 82.2 mm followed by Kundapur—49.4 mm and Udupi—34.7 mm.

Most of the lowlying areas in the district remained inundated following heavy rains. Major rivers are overflowing, however, they remained below the danger level.

Several damages were reported in Udupi. A house belonging to Raviraj in Handadi village collapsed when a coconut tree fell on the house. The house belonging to Gopi Poojarthy in 52nd Heroor village was damaged owing to heavy rains.

 A house belonging to Ananth Naik was damaged in Balakudru village. A house belonging to Girija Poojarthy in Shirva village collapsed. In Karkala taluk, a house belonging to Biju collapsed. Sericulture cultivation belonging to Sheela Shet was damaged. In Kukkuje, Ashok Poojary was injured when he was hit by lightning.

In Kundapur taluk, the roof of the house belonging to Shankara Koraga of Kumbashi village collapsed due to rains. Several houses partially damaged following rains in Gopadi village.
