Mangaluru, Nov 02, 2016: It is notable that the Department of Women and Child Welfare has opened ’Mamatheya Thottilu’ (cradle of love), at Government Lady Goschen Hospital on Nov 1, Tuesday, in order to prevent incidents of abandoning of new born babies. The cradle has been placed as a part of child-friendly programme of the Department and was inaugurated by District In-charge Minister B Ramanath Rai.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister said that women who are not in a position to care for their newborns can make use of this cradle, kept at the Special Treatment Unit at the hospital. The Department will take care of the child, he assured.
Women and Child Welfare Department deputy director Sundar Poojary said that the children kept in the cradle will undergo the treatment required and then will be shifted to the Special Adoption Centre run by Ramakrishna Sevasharama in Puttur. A paper notification will be published, asking relatives to take the custody of the child. If no relatives come forward within two months of the notification, the child will be given for adoption, he explained.
Lady Goschen Hospital superintendent Dr Savitha said that Mamatheya Thottilu will help in providing suitable treatment for the child.
Chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights Kripa Alva, DHO Dr Ramakrishna, Wenlock Hospital superintendent Dr Rajeshwari Devi and others were present.
