Bishop submits memorandum to City police commissioner

Mangalore, July 22, 2011: Rev. Fr. Aloysius Paul D’Souza, the bishop of Mangalore, submitted a memorandum requesting the early withdrawal of cases registered against Christian youth during the church attacks of 2008 to Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh today.

As he was submitting the memorandum, the bishop said that they had earlier submitted a memorandum to CM B. S. Yeddyurappa and L. K. Advani when they visited Mangalore during the World Konkani Convention and that both leaders had promised to get the cases against the Christian youth withdrawn, but they had not kept their promises.

Speaking about the cases, advocate Ivan D’Souza said that around 45 cases have been registered and that the state government had promised that these cases will be withdrawn after the Somashekar Commission submits its report. However, the cases have still not been withdrawn, he added. He said that the youth cannot go abroad for employment because of these cases.

Receiving the memorandum, Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh said that he will forward it to the state government and the concerned authorities.

Fr. Onil D’Silva, Sr. Michelle, and Dr. J. B. Crasta had accompanied the bishop.
