Belthangady, January 24, 2026: Two persons accused of attempting to steal a motorcycle were allegedly caught by members of the public, assaulted and tied to a tree before being handed over to the Venoor police.
Police have registered a case against the two for attempting motorcycle theft. At the same time, based on a counter-complaint filed by the assaulted men, a separate case has been registered against eight persons for assault. Police are investigating both cases.
Incident details:
According to the complaint, the incident occurred around 2.30 am on January 20 at Palaragoli in Marodi village of Beltangady. Jayapoojari’s wife reportedly alerted him over the phone about two men behaving suspiciously in the area. Jayapoojari, who was attending a nemotsava programme, rushed to the spot along with Deviprasad and others.
They allegedly noticed the accused fleeing after stealing Deviprasad’s motorcycle. When they chased and intercepted them, the accused reportedly tried to escape with the bike. At this point, a crowd of around 25 to 30 people allegedly caught the two men, assaulted them and tied them to a tree.
Counter-complaint:
The accused, identified as Abdul Samad and Moydin Naseer, residents of Kuloor, stated that they had come to Marodi to visit the house of Naseer’s relatives. While searching for the house late at night around 2.30 am, they allegedly lost their way. They claimed that when they attempted to take a motorcycle parked near a house at Palaragoli, a group of 25 to 30 people stopped them, assaulted them and tied them to a tree.
Based on the counter-complaint, police have registered a case against Bachu, Nithin, Naresh Anchan, Ratnakar, Satvik, Deviprasad, Sudhir, Chandappa and others, police said.
