Sullia, July 7, 2026: Padma Shri awardee and renowned bridge engineer Dr Girish Bharadwaj, popularly known as the "Bridge Man of India" and the "Commander of Suspension Bridges," passed away due to illness at KVG Hospital in Sullia on Tuesday morning. He was 76.

Dr Bharadwaj, who had built more than 150 suspension bridges across the country, had recently returned from a visit to temples in Uttara Kannada district. He had been suffering from heart-related health issues over the past few days and was admitted to KVG Hospital for treatment. Despite medical efforts, he passed away on Tuesday.

Dr Bharadwaj earned national and international recognition for designing and constructing low-cost, eco-friendly suspension bridges. Through the construction of hundreds of bridges connecting remote rural areas, he significantly improved connectivity and transformed the lives of countless people living in isolated communities.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to engineering and his immense service to society, the Government of India honoured him with the prestigious Padma Shri.
