Kundapur: Jewellery shop burgled using gas cutter in Maravanthe; silver, cash stolen

Mangalore Today News Network

Kundapur, Jul 6, 2026: Burglars allegedly broke into a jewellery shop in Maravanthe by cutting open its shutter with a gas cutter and stole silver bullion and cash sometime between the night of July 4 and the morning of July 5.

The burglary occurred at a jewellery shop owned by Vishwanath Billava, located in Maruthi Complex in Maravanthe village, near National Highway 66.

Robbery case

According to the police, the heavy rain on the night of July 4 is believed to have aided the burglars in carrying out the theft. The accused allegedly used a gas cutter to slice open the shop’s shutter, gained entry into the premises, and escaped with around 600 grams of silver bullion, valued at approximately ₹1.44 lakh, along with ₹1,000 in cash kept in a drawer inside the shop.

The burglars also allegedly damaged CCTV cameras installed at neighbouring shops before committing the theft, apparently to avoid detection.

Kundapur DySP H.D. Kulkarni, Byndoor Circle Inspector Shivakumar, Gangolli Police Sub-Inspectors Pavan Nayak and Sudarshan, along with other police personnel, visited the spot on Sunday and conducted an inspection. A technical team and fingerprint experts also examined the scene and collected evidence.

Police suspect the burglary may have been carried out by a professional gang, considering the use of a gas cutter, the deliberate damage to CCTV cameras, and the timing of the crime during heavy rainfall. However, the exact circumstances will be established only after the investigation is completed.
