Visually impaired Mangaluru student beats all odds to secure first rank

Mangaluru, June 16, 2024: Adhish Uchil, a visually-impaired student from SDM College, Mangaluru, has achieved first rank in the BA (HRD) examinations conducted by Mangalore University in 2023, securing a Cumulative Grade Point Achievement (CGPA) of 8.74.

Expressing his joy to the media, Adhish said, "I’m happy to receive the top rank from the university. The teachers were very supportive, providing me with study materials and guidance on writing the exams. I used non-visual desktop access on my laptop, which read all the study materials to me, helping me to understand everything."

He further explained, "Enable India, an NGO in Bengaluru, taught me to use the software. I paid attention in class and prepared my notes diligently. The teachers also shared the PowerPoint presentations used in classrooms, which was very helpful."

Initially, Adhish’s parents would drop him off at college due to his visual impairment. However, after training with the National Association for the Blind (NAB) in Bengaluru on using a cane, he began walking to college from his nearby home. He fondly recalled, "Before the NAB training, one of my lecturers, Dr. Charles, taught me to use the cane within the college campus. The NAB training, however, enabled me to navigate the roads confidently."

Looking ahead, Adhish shared his aspirations, "I want to pursue an MBA and am preparing for the Common Admission Test (CAT) to get into an IIM. The CAT exam is likely to be held in November." Adhish is the son of Sudhir Uchil, an employee at MRPL, and Gunashree.
