Mangaluru, Aug 5, 2025: A historic T-55 war tank, which played a significant role in the 1965 and 1971 India-Pakistan wars, has reached Mangaluru and will soon be displayed as a symbol of military pride.
The decommissioned tank was transported from the Kirkee depot in Pune on a special trailer, arriving in the city on Monday night. It has been brought to Mangaluru by the City Corporation (MCC), which will also oversee its maintenance.
Following the national tradition of showcasing retired military equipment as ‘war trophies’, Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta had requested the Ministry of Defence to sanction a tank for the city. The request was approved, and the tank was allotted free of cost three months ago.
Currently stationed near the Circuit House, the 40-tonne T-55 will soon be relocated to a specially constructed platform near the Kadri War Memorial, where it will serve as a tribute to the bravery of soldiers and an inspiration for the youth to join the armed forces.
The tank began its journey from Pune last Friday and completed the three-day transit to Mangaluru, marking the start of its new role as a historical landmark.
