Mangalore Today News Network

MANGALURU, May 24,  2026: Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta has announced that the Union government has approved a ₹414.16-crore project for the construction of an elevated flyover and service roads on National Highway 66 from Baikampady to KIOCL Junction, aimed at improving connectivity to the New Mangalore Port Authority.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated the tender process for the project, which will cover a 3.075-km stretch. The plan includes a 1.520-km six-lane elevated flyover to be executed under the EPC model, along with 5.825 km of service roads on both sides of the highway.

According to the MP, the corridor serves as a crucial route for cargo movement linked to export and import operations at the New Mangalore Port. The proposed infrastructure is expected to separate highway traffic from local vehicles, improving traffic flow and enhancing road safety.

The New Mangalore Port Authority will provide additional land and financial support required for the project.

Chowta said the development would significantly benefit the Baikampady industrial area and the KIOCL region, while boosting industrial growth, economic activity and coastal connectivity in Dakshina Kannada.

He noted that the project had faced delays earlier as the port-area road was under the jurisdiction of National Highway Logistics Management Limited, leading to administrative and funding challenges. These issues were later resolved, enabling the transfer of the project to NHAI.

The MP also stated that approval had been secured for underpasses at Baikampady and Kuloor Junction at a cost of ₹11.63 crore, with work already underway.

Chowta thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari for approving the project, stating that it would strengthen port connectivity and contribute to the district’s development.
