Swamijis go on protest fast against Paryaya controversy

Mangalore Today News Network

Udupi, Jan 17, 2012: Shri Sugunendrateertha Swamiji of Puttige Mutt and Shri Vishweshateertha Swamiji of Pejawar Mutt began their protest fast on Jan 17 Tuesday against the fact that the Puttige Mutt Seer’s name was not included in the formal invitation for the Paryaya Festival, during which Shri Vishwavallabateertha Swamiji of Sode Vadiraja Mutt is to ascend the Paryaya Peeta.

While Shri Sugunendrateertha Swamiji fasted at Lord Anantheshwara Temple along with a large number of devotees, Shri Vishweshateertha Swamiji fasted alone at Pejawar Mutt.

The Pejawar Seer had been disappointed when the Puttige Seer had blamed him of not showing enough interest in resolving the controversy, although the Puttige Seer later withdrew his remark and welcomed the Pejawar Seer’s decision to fast in protest.

Shri Sugunendrateertha Swamiji told reporters before beginning his fast that he will convert his own Paryaya into a festival for people of all religions by inviting them all to the Paryaya Darbar if the present controversy is not resolved quickly. He stated that his Paryaya procession will comprise the leaders of all Hindu sects seated in palanquins. Through these statements, he hinted that he intends to break many more traditions if the Sode Mutt Seer refuses to withdraw the ban imposed on him for breaking the Mutt traditions and going abroad.
