St. Aloysius College organizes national seminar on chemical sciences

Mangalore, Jan 23, 2012 : Dr. B. S. Sherigar, the former vice chancellor of Kuvempu University in Shimoga, inaugurated a national-level seminar titled “Recent Advances in Chemical Sciences” organized by the department of chemistry of St. Aloysius College in its Eric Mathias Auditorium on Jan 23 Monday.

In his inaugural address, he said that India is currently producing only 6000 post graduates per year as against the 30,000 post graduates produced in foreign countries. Speaking of the need to increase this number, he suggested that research activities should be encouraged, teachers should become more open minded, and participation in workshops and seminars should increase.

Delivering the presidential address, Fr. Swebert D’Souza, said that only 7 – 8 percent of the young people in India get post graduate education. Speaking of the importance of changing this scenario, he said that research activities must be encouraged in the country.

Students from various colleges, post graduates, and research scholars participated in this 2-day event.

Dr. A. Nithyananda Shetty, the professor of Chemistry at National Institute of Technology in Suratkal, took up the first session on Fuel Cells from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. this morning.

Sessions such as Designing Organic Synthesis by Dr. S. Kabilan, the professor of organic chemistry at Annamalai University in Annamalai Nagar, and 2D Nanomaterials: Graphene and its Inorganic Cousins by Dr. Michael Rajamathi, the associate professor of chemistry at St. Joseph’s College in Bangalore are scheduled for the first day.

Among the dignitaries present were Dr. Ivan Pinto, Fr. Denzil Lobo, Dr. Ronald Nazareth, and Dr. Richard Gonsalves.
