Ullal, Oct 8, 2011 : A poster of Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, who is one of the accused in the Malegaon blast, was put up in Ullal 3 days back, creating a lot of uneasiness in the locality and forcing the police to intervene.
Nawaz Ullal, one of the residents of Ullal, said that the poster was raised near the old Ullal Police Station near the road leading from Ullal bus stand to Kodi three days back. It is about 10ft tall and bears a verse from the Bhagvad Gita, in which Krishna promises that he will be back whenever there is adharma in the society.
Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh informed the reporters of The Hindu that he had directed the assistant commissioner of police (south) to visit the spot and get the poster removed.
Reportedly, the poster was put up by Om Shakti Friends, a local group. The police are now issuing notices to the group demanding to know if they had taken the required permission to put up the poster.
Suresh Bhat Bakrebail, the president of the Komu Souharda Vedike and vice president of the People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), stated that it was wrong to glorify a person indicted of terrorism.
Responding to the poster, Varadesh Hiregange, the director of Manipal Institute of Communication, said that the word dharma has no English equivalent, adding that by placing this verse near Pragya Singh Thakur, the poster is trying to justify wrong actions.
