Mangalore, July 7: Umer Farooq, one of the eight survivors of the Mangalore plane  crash, was discharged from AJ Hospital and Research Centre on July 6, Tuesday. The hospital organized a farewell programme to wish him all the best. Farooq had taken treatment at the hospital for the past 40 days.

27-year-old Farooq said that he never failed to pray to God to shower his blessings on all the victims of the tragic plane crash of May 22 and their bereaved family members. He said that he could escape death only through the grace of God. He also thanked the doctors and staff of AJ Hospital for taking care of him as if he were one of their family members.


Recalling the tragic incidents of May 22, he said that he reached the railway track after escaping from the ill-fated aircraft and was taken to a nearby town by a person called Shareef, after which he took an autorickshaw to AJ Hospital. Dr. Prashanth Marla, who treated 2 plane crash survivors, said that Farooq reached the hospital even before news of the plane crash broke out.


He also said that Farooq needs to take rest and treatment for six more months before being able to resume normal life.


Kuldeep Singh Kanha, an Air India official who was present on the occasion, said that AI will bear all the medical expenses until he recovers completely. Chairman of AJ Hospital and Research Centre A. J. Shetty wished Farooq a healthy and prosperous future. Circle Inspector of Panambur Valentine D’Souza, Dr. Ramesh Pai, Dr. Dinesh Kadam, and others were present at the farewell party. Farooq is one of the six children of Mohammed Bawa, who resides in Ullal. His entire family had arrived at the hospital to take him home.
