Mangalore, July 2, 2012: Speaking at a program organized by the Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists’ Association at Press Club in Mangalore on July 2, Monday, Jogi, editor of the weekly supplement of Udayavani, voiced his opinion that the craze for colorful layout is rapidly converting newspaper supplements into “dustbins of words.”
Regretting that the media has increased the distance between newspapers and literature, Mr. Jogi said that editorial pages once had great literary value, but today they are nothing but debates on insignificant issues.
Speaking about journalism in his younger days, Mr. Jogi said that he was inspired by journalists such as P. Lankesh, who were also great writers. Stating that great writers such as P. Sainath and Lankesh contributed a great deal to literature through their journals, he said that today’s media is no longer encouraging literature in that way. He urged Kannada litterateurs to make their presence felt in the world of Kannada media just as people like Chetan Bhagath established their presence in the English media.
Delivering the inaugural address, Vasanth Kumar Perla, program executive of Akashvani Mangalore, said that journalists should place before the public credible reports as the media, and especially visual media such as the television, have a great responsibility toward the public.
