Karnataka CM sets Nov 1 deadline to surrender illegal firearms, warns of strict action

Bengaluru, Sep 11, 2026: Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has set November 1 as the deadline for surrendering unlicensed firearms and warned that those who fail to comply will face strict legal action.

Speaking at the Forest Martyrs’ Day event at Aranya Bhavan in Bengaluru, Shivakumar stressed the need to curb poaching and protect forests and wildlife.

“Poaching has to stop. We will give time until November 1 to surrender unlicensed firearms. We will only seek an apology letter from those who surrender their weapons. We have intelligence inputs and will conduct searches against those who do not comply. They will face strict action as per the law,” he said.

The Chief Minister added that those who wish to retain their firearms could apply for a licence.

Shivakumar said he had received a request to introduce a weekly allowance for frontline forest department personnel. A similar request has also been received from the police department, he said, adding that the government would take a decision after considering the financial implications.

He urged forest officers and frontline personnel to handle sensitive situations with care and work closely with communities living near forest areas.

“I urge you to use your common sense. There are people living near forests. You should work with them and ensure they are not harassed,” he said.

The Chief Minister also directed forest officials not to unnecessarily delay government development projects in forest areas, including roads and power lines.

“Do not delay government projects such as roads and electricity lines. Instead, work with the government as partners,” he said.

Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister Ramalinga Reddy said 66 forest department officers and personnel had lost their lives in the line of duty.

He said Karnataka’s forest cover currently stands at 21.5% of its geographical area and needs to be increased to 33%.

The government has introduced the Tegasiri schemes to promote teak cultivation, which, he said, would benefit farmers while also increasing green cover.
