Mangaluru, Nov 3, 2026: Lawyers in Mangaluru boycotted court proceedings and staged a protest on Tuesday, condemning the growing incidents of murders and attacks targeting advocates across Karnataka. The protest was held as part of a statewide agitation following a decision by the Bengaluru Bar Council and the advocates’ association.
The Mangaluru Bar Association organised the protest to draw attention to the increasing threats to the safety of members of the legal fraternity and to urge the government to introduce an Advocates’ Protection Act.
Addressing the protesters, members of the association cited a series of recent incidents involving attacks on advocates. Around 15 days ago, a young advocate named Manjunath was allegedly shot dead after assailants barged into his house. Subsequently, advocate Sriram was murdered, while an attempt was also made on the life of advocate Venkataramana.
Expressing concern over the recurring incidents, the lawyers demanded that the state government take immediate steps to ensure the safety of advocates and enact a special law to protect them from attacks and threats.
