New Delhi, Nov 30, 2025: Pope Leo XIV has appointed Fr Edward Baretto as the coadjutor bishop of the Diocese of Darjeeling, the Vatican announced on Friday. Fr Baretto, 60, currently serves as the judicial vicar of the diocese and coordinator of its diocesan commissions.

Born on January 5, 1965, in Alampuri in Bantwal taluk of the Mangaluru diocese, Fr Baretto completed his early education in Nirkan and Mangaluru before joining the John XXIII Minor Seminary in Darjeeling in 1982. He pursued philosophy at Morning Star College, Barrackpore, and theology at the same institution before being ordained a priest on March 25, 1993.

Over the years, he has held several key roles, including assistant director of the minor seminary in Darjeeling, editor of the diocesan newsletter Tea Leaves, philosophy lecturer at Morning Star College, and judicial vicar for the dioceses of Darjeeling and Bagdogra. He has also served in multiple parishes and, since 2022, has headed the Divya Vani Pastoral Centre.

The Diocese of Darjeeling, established in 1962, covers the districts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong, the state of Sikkim, and Bhutan. It has 47,823 Catholics, 73 parishes, 107 priests and 244 religious. Bishop Stephen Lepcha, 72, has led the diocese for 28 years.
